Nature of Work
Under close supervision, at the entry-level, these positions perform professional work in a training capacity providing a wide variety of engineering services or creative works. The performance of these duties requires the application of special knowledge of the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. This will be applied to such services or creative works as consultation, investigation, evaluation, and planning of engineering works and systems. These positions may plan the use of land and water and/or review construction projects for the purpose of assuring compliance with plans. Public or private works or services may be in connection with any utilities, structures, buildings, machines, equipment, processes, work systems, projects and/or industrial or consumer products or equipment of a mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or thermal nature, safeguarding life, health or property. May specialize in a particular area of emphasis and assist on program development and technical support. These positions perform other professional services as necessary to the planning, progress and completion of projects. The duties of these positions may require occasional field activities. Perform related work as required.

These positions perform in a training capacity applying engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to services or creative works which require the application of rules, regulations and operating procedures.

Learn to coordinate construction projects.

Learn to conduct interim and final inspections of construction projects to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations and specifications.

Prepare and review plans, permits and/or contracts for projects; calculate material quantities needed for construction projects; recommend alternative construction methods.

Perform data analysis to determine or establish performance standards/limits.

Learn to conduct interim and final inspections of and provide technical assistance to the applicable regulated community to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and specifications.

Learn to write reports detailing recommendations, conclusions, and findings from inspections and reviews.

Plot cross sections and topography, compute grade lines and earthwork, draw typical sections, and figure drainage.

May attend meetings or public hearings to observe or attest to the findings of environmental impact.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of federal and state laws and agency policies and practices.

Knowledge of equipment and other instruments used in various types of engineering.

Knowledge of fundamentals of various types of engineering.

Ability to apply engineering principles in solving engineering problems.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Engineering.
OR
Substitution: Bachelor's degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited college or university with a major in Civil, Electrical, Electrical Design, Mechanical, Chemical or Mining Engineering Technology.
Special Requirement: A valid driver’s license is required.
NOTE: At the appointing agency’s discretion, competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified permanent.
