JOB SUMMARY
The Patient Care Assistant is responsible for assisting the care team in meeting the needs of inpatient patients, as delegated by and functioning under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates knowledge/skills necessary to provide appropriate care specific to the population served. Performs other related duties as deemed competent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Observes the patient at the bedside, assists with maintaining a safe environment, serves as a role model for fostering positive communications. Communicates effectively with the nursing team, reports patient needs to the nursing team, assists in providing a healing environment. Reads to patients, talks to patients, watches TV and/or listens to music with patients, showing respect for the patient and their family. Initiates and/or participates in CPR. Assists with maintaining documentation to established policies and procedures. Obtains vital signs as delegated, provides basic patient care needs in accordance with competency checklist, and rounds purposefully on patients and their family. Maintains UNC Health Blue Ridge behavioral standards.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires range of motion within functional limits. Requires frequently: pushing 40lbs; pulling 80lbs; standing; walking; repetitive trunk rotation-standing; manual dexterity; both handedness (both hands must be used); functional vision and hearing; Occasionally lifting 35lbs from floor to waist and waist to eye level; one handed carrying 15lbs; work squatting/crouching; visual color discrimination; and visual depth perception.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Requires working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider. Must complete Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and obtain CNA I within one year of hire date. Must have strong communication skills, ability to work effectively with others, and have a strong desire to learn. A minimum of 12 hours per year of continuing education, including any mandatory education requirements.
