Tazewell County, Illinois is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and collaborative individual to serve as a Veterans Service Officer.

Appointed by and under the direct supervision of the Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent, this position assists veterans and their families in accessing military and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. This is a full-time non-exempt position with an hourly salary of $23.76.
Responsibilities:
  • Interviews veterans, spouses, and dependents to determine eligibility for federal, state, and local benefits as well as to assure maximum benefits are received.
  • Serves as a liaison with various federal, state, and county agencies in addition to private sector providers in establishing veterans’ benefit entitlements.
  • Reviews legislation, regulations, and precedents as well as studies veteran’s medical report and history to evaluate and determine the validity of the claim.
  • Obtains claimant's power of attorney.
  • Prepares claim forms/briefs and assembles pertinent evidence.
  • Requests hearing before government board and present brief.
  • Reviews government board decision for grounds for appeal.
  • Advises veterans on insurance, vocational, and other matters while working in cooperation with the VA and other agencies.
  • Prepares bulletins and correspondence to acquaint others with current activities and legislation.
  • Participates in or initiates civic functions to inform the public of services rendered as well as the rights and benefits of veterans and dependents.
  • Assigned other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the organization.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • One (1) year experience in sales, public relations, welfare work, benefits administration, or any other type of work involving extensive public contact.
  • A veteran who has been honorably discharged from service in the Armed Forces of the United States (in accordance with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Act in IL House Bill 3255).
  • One (1) year experience in office/clerical duties.
  • One (1) year of customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of veteran benefits and services.
  • Knowledge of federal and state federal legislation.
  • Must receive accreditation from the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) within six (6) months of employment as well as complete continuing education requirements each year.
