The Lutheran Center (national office) is located in Chicago, Illinois. A staff of 400, under the leadership of the Presiding Bishop, serve as administrators, advisors, conveners, partners, and resource people for the ELCA and its ministries. Staff lead the work of national, domestic, and global ministries and programs including Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger, Service & Justice, Christian Community and Leadership, and Innovation. We are also home to five of our separately incorporated ministries: The Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, Women of the ELCA, Lutheran Men in Mission, the ELCA Foundation and the ELCA Federal Credit Union.

About the position

Theological Ethics (T.E.) in the Office of the Presiding Bishop directs and manages the development of ELCA social teaching, social issue studies, and other means of moral deliberation. This temporary, part-time position will support that work, with particular attention to preparing and managing electronic documents. The responsibilities will include updating the Faith and Society website and creating database sources. Some communication tasks also are involved. The overall purpose of this work with documents and web is to increase availability and awareness of social teaching for members, congregations, synod, agencies, and the churchwide staff.

This is a part-time (up to 20 hours/week), non-exempt (hourly), temporary position starting January 2023 and ending approximately May 2023.

1. Prepare Social Policy Resolutions (SPRs) from Churchwide Assembly actions of 2019 & 2022 for posting.

2. Archive (online) the SPRs relegated to historical status in 2019 and 2022.

3. Review accuracy of T.E.'s website links and text and correct; assist with development of text for several new pages.

4. Update Lutheran Ethicist Network membership list (Outlook group).

5. Assist in creating a topical/subject database/index allowing ELCA members to search social teaching for passages on various subjects.

6. Support T.E. media & communication work, specifically to increase awareness of and engagement with:

a. Journal of Lutheran Ethics (increase subscription).

b. Social statement study responses (Spring).

c. social message adopted (Spring).

7. Update archive drive.

8. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

1. Demonstrated skill in operating a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment especially Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Adobe; working experience with website text creation and management.

2. Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in handling workload; ability to prioritize work and work independently with limited input from supervisor.


3. Strong organization skills; ability to maintain accurate and detailed records with thorough and thoughtful attention to detail.

4. Respect for the confidential nature of the work and trustworthy in the use of confidential information.

5. Demonstrated comfort with composition, grammar, and punctuation.

6. Some knowledge of ELCA churchwide office purpose and procedures preferred, not required.


Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone.
