DESCRIPTION
The Department of Ophthalmology is comprised of 30 faculty physicians and scientists, 10 resident physicians, and 13 (include clinical and research) post-doctoral physicians and scientists and over 150 staff with 6 divisions - Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea & Refractive Surgery, Pediatrics, Oculoplastics, and Neuro-ophthalmology. Clinical services are provided at the Shiley Eye Center, Ratner Eye Center, Perlman Oculoplastics, Hillcrest Eye Center. The Department of Ophthalmology has the largest single outpatient clinic at the University of California, San Diego with over 110,000 visits annually. Additionally, over 5400 surgical cases are performed.
The Department of Ophthalmology is rapidly growing and looking to expand its practice at the Shiley Eye Center and in regional satellites, including possible acquisition of existing practices.
Under general supervision of the Financial Services Supervisor, incumbent serves as the patient financial counselor for all surgical procedures being scheduled for the Department of Ophthalmology. The position will have primary duties and responsibilities to: ensure smooth flow of authorizations; interface with data entry for the authorizations obtained by surgical prior authorization team and be able to perform prior authorization as needed; identify and resolve systemic issues with surgical scheduling as they arise. This position is responsible for facilitating the processing of authorizations associated with orders placed in EPIC. This position works closely with our surgeons, nurse practitioners, Attending physicians, Ophthalmic Technicians and internal department personnel to ensure that all required information has been received and that it is in EPIC.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated high level, administrative experience in a clinical and academic setting. Demonstrated ability to perform at a high level of proficiency and competency.
Graduation from high school and three (3) years of appropriate experience including one (1) year of supervisory or mentoring experience where applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Advanced organizational skills to meet many concurrent deadlines on a variety of projects. Must be able to prioritize workload while keeping functions in perspective and to encourage others to work with you to complete projects.
Extensive knowledge of medical, surgical and anatomical terminology.
Strong organizational skills, including assisting in the development of objectives and policies.
Excellent communication skills to obtain and impart information via the telephone, electronic mail and in person.
Ability to work independently, and control own schedule, and produce results.
Must be a team player who openly develop lines of communication with others.
Demonstrated skill in software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheet creation.
Proven experience with authorizations for clinic visits and surgeries.
Experience working with all levels of management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- General knowledge of contractual relationships between UCSD and various Payors.
- Knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures, including computer knowledge of the EPIC system and subsystems.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Must be willing to work occasional overtime and weekends as needed.
- Work Location: Shiley Eye Center and Perlman Oculoplastics.
- Satellite clinics as necessary.
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $51,532 - $64,039 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
