The Registered Nurse (RN) provides nursing services and oversees the medication system of a multi-disciplinary mental health treatment team. Manages an assigned caseload of patients, providing nursing care and clinical case management, taking responsibility to improve patient outcomes and to manage resources and assure cost effective, clinically effective, and coordinated services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements (if applicable):

Education:
A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and must have and maintain current licensure as a registered nurse (RN) with the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Work experience:
At least one year experience working with children, adolescents, and or adults with serious mental illness is required. Three to five years' experience working in behavioral health field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Working knowledge of psychiatric medications is essential. Understanding of nursing standards, ability to work with members in the community that are not in a clinical setting and provide medication education to members. Understanding of nursing principles, medication storage, HIPAA standards and medical service coordination. Ability to work with members who have mental illness that may require frequent redirection.

Considerable knowledge of a wide range of medical, behavioral, and psychosocial problems and their treatments. Considerable knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and their treatment as they relate to clinical interventions and appropriate therapies that are based on medical and/or psychiatric diagnoses. Knowledge of the fundamental principles, techniques, and methods of the recovery process and knowledge of the population being served.

Knowledge of task analysis, goal writing and the ability to observe behaviors and communicate these observations in writing and verbally, make recommendations for treatment and document progress. Ability to work cooperatively, creatively, and productively as a member of a service delivery team. Teamwork is an essential job function and is evaluated for both conduct and performance issues. Ability and willingness to take on the service assignments of other team members when absences occur and communicate with other team members in a clear, honest, and open manner.

Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members being served by the Mobile Crisis/23 Hours Crisis Team. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, plan and execute work effectively. This employee must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the caseload and their families as well as civic, legal, medical, social, and religious organizations. Ability to work cooperatively, creatively, and productively as a member of a service delivery team and communicate with other team members in a clear, honest, and open manner. Ability to establish appropriate professional boundaries and relationships with staff and members consistent with professional practice and professional ethics.

Travel Requirements:
Valid VA Driver’s License and insurance required. Travel will vary depending on the daily schedule for this position. All travel is in the community where the members live and work.

Essential Job Duties:
1. Assesses the physical and mental health needs of assigned patients. Provide nursing evaluation to include medical history, general physical condition, medication history while completing on-going medical assessment. Implements nursing interventions to assist clients in their recovery. Demonstrates knowledge of psychotropic medications and other prescribed medications. Administers and monitors for effectiveness and reactions to psychotropic mediations and other prescribed medications. 40%
2. Documents nursing plan of care appropriately within required time-frames. 30%
3. Responsible for promoting an environment that supports caring and courteous service, safe patient care, and positive working relationships. Promotes mental health by implementing nursing interventions for behavioral problems, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring conditions to promote health and safety, symptom management. Coordinate care through the health continuum using health education, health coaching, and health promotion. 25%
