Position Summary:

Assigns, supervises, and reviews work of both skilled and semi-skilled City employees performing day-to-day repair and maintenance duties of the City of Prescott for parks, lakes, facilities, and recreation systems. This position performs assignments in parks or lakes maintenance, community service, or landscape maintenance

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This position has supervisory responsibilities. Under direction of the Recreation Services Superintendent, this job class is expected to exercise independent judgment within guidelines in the disposition of daily activities

Essential Duties:

  • Sets short- and long-term maintenance and care schedules for the park and recreation system, which may include City facilities, lakes, rights-of-way, ball fields, grounds, and equipment
  • Schedules staff and supervises regular and seasonal Recreation Services maintenance workers
  • Sets priorities and organizes resources, including personnel, equipment and materials, to accomplish maintenance and care schedules
  • Manages, interviews, hires, supervises, and evaluates staff
  • Trains new hires and current employees in safe maintenance and operation standards
  • Supervises the daily operation and maintenance at aquatic facility
  • Oversees daily maintenance operations with on-site inspections
  • Ensures all safety policies and procedures are followed in the operation of equipment and the handling of chemicals and materials
  • Oversees purchases; maintains budget levels
  • Obtains cost information and prepares requisitions for materials and supplies
  • Collects money from fee pay stations
  • Schedules equipment for regular preventive maintenance
  • Issues citations; presents facts to court
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints
  • Supervises weekly projects
  • Schedules special event set ups
  • Performs snow removal for sidewalks, lots, and streets
  • Inspects playgrounds
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Five (5) years of full-time management and supervision in park maintenance or closely related work; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a valid Arizona Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) or obtain within six (6) months of hire date. Possess a valid Pesticide Applicator's license (Turf & Ornamental, ROW Categories) within twelve (12) months of hire. Aquatics Facility Operator's license desired

  • Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies, procedures, codes, and ordinances related to parks and recreation.

  • Knowledge of high-altitude landscaping and grounds maintenance
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair of public parks and recreational systems
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for the maintenance, repair, and remodeling of parks and recreational facilities
  • Skill in operating and working around moving equipment
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and managing a diverse number of maintenance activities at parks or lakes, including vehicles and equipment
  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards
  • Skill in supervising, evaluating, training, and motivating employees
  • Skill in preparing, defending, and administering budgets
  • Skill in communicating, both orally and in writing
  • Skill in utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state/federal/local officials, elected officials, assigned staff, and City residents

Physical Demands And Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a city office environment and in the field
  • May require working mandatory overtime for nights, weekends, and special events
  • Performs work in adverse weather conditions; in confined spaces or high traffic areas; and with exposure to chemicals, rotating equipment, and noise; and in other potentially hazardous environments
  • Safely operates required equipment and City vehicles as needed
  • Clearly, concisely, and effectively communicates in person, over the radio, and by telephone
  • Safely lifts and carries heavy (50 - 100 pounds) equipment, tools, and materials needed to complete assignments
  • Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands
