Description

This is a non-exempt position which is non-hazardous police work in the field or at the Police Department. The Public Safety Aide provides numerous human services, general information, and assistance to the public. An employee in this classification is responsible for performing various duties within the Police Department such as accident investigation; preliminary investigations; parking enforcement; vehicle services; animal control; services relating to physical and sanitary conditions of domiciles and grounds; crime scene processing; preparation of various reports; utilization of police communication equipment, operating a motor vehicle or other technical functions as required. Incumbents are unarmed civilian employees with no arrest powers. The employee is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative.

Essential Job Functions
Because it is difficult if not impossible to present a finite list of every possible function to be performed by employee, the City of Wilton Manors reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to modify and update this job description and to ask employee to perform tasks beyond the duties presented herein. In the event a change is necessary to update the essential functions of the job, the City will provide as much notice as practicable to the employee.


  • Maintains investigative logs; police reports; pawn slips; evidence slips and records supplemental information from victims of crime; investigates traffic accidents and issues related traffic citations; directs traffic.
  • Field work: investigates minor non-hazardous crimes and non-criminal incidents; processes minor crime scenes for latent evidence.
  • Assists citizens with vehicle identification number verifications for title applications.
  • Handles citizen inquiries; contacts various government groups to facilitate information flow.
  • Notifies victims of crime of the recovery of their property.
  • Completes written accident reports and police offense/incident reports; testifies in matters brought before the Court.
  • Transports lost or found children, witnesses, indigent individuals, and complainants.
  • Performs duties in specialized units or in coordination with them.
  • Performs various tasks, both indoors and outdoors, and other work as required and as directed

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, supplemented by a minimum 1 to 2 years previous experience and/or training in the area of law enforcement or code enforcement. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license.

Must successfully complete Public Safety Aide Academy either before or after commencing employment with the City. At the discretion of the City, must obtain and maintain State of Florida Accident Investigations Certification.

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to frequently squat or kneel on hard and/or uneven surfaces
  • Ability to withstand, with proper precautions, prolonged exposure outdoors in heat, humidity, and inclement weather

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge of State Statutes, traffic laws, local ordinances and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of geography of the City as well as physical and social characteristics.
  • Knowledge of City zoning code and ordinances pertaining to housing, noise abatement, public health code and abandoned vehicles and rules and regulations governing inspection and enforcement.
  • Knowledge of modern information systems and standard software application; ability to operate a personal computer and properly use a Police radio.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public in all situations.
  • Ability to operate a several different types of automobiles and van-type vehicles and possess the required license.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, and to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize work assignments and work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other municipal employees, City officials and the general public.
