The Medicine Manager has the responsibility to maximize the productivity and efficiency of Michigan Humane's veterinary centers and shelter medicine teams by working with the staff to create an environment that supports high-quality medical care and ensured exceptional client service.


Responsibilities:

  • Humanely treat and care for all animals entrusted to Michigan Humane.
  • Supervise the operation of the facility in the absence of the Director of Facility Operations.
  • Monitor all financial and operational metrics, develop reports and ensure plan deviations are addressed.
  • Manager performance management and development processes, informing decisions such as salary changes, promotions, discipline, future assignments, etc. Supervise and provide direction to Assistant Managers, and medical staff, and discipline employees, as necessary.
  • Ensure that staff adheres to Michigan Humane policies, protocols, and procedures; and complies with all local, state and federal laws. Maintain payroll records as required.
  • Provide a positive work environment that supports morale and staff retention. Work with staff to promote a customer-centered and fear-free environment.
  • Meet with individual staff members, coach those who are experiencing work-related problems; pursuing satisfactory resolution as needed.
  • Promote Michigan Humane programs and general goodwill among clients and the animals we serve while building the MH culture and brand.
  • Ensure the veterinary center and shelter medicine staff provide client education regarding preventative care, pet health needs, hospital services, marketing campaigns and other related information.
  • Responsible for cost containment, cash control and banking, loss prevention, ordering office and medical supplies and inventory management.
  • Select, train, coach, schedule and evaluate the technical staff.
  • Determining appropriate diagnostics for animals in care, monitoring and maintaining population to ensure a sustained level of care capacity.
  • Assist with animal health and behavioral concerns; consult with CVMs and/or behavior department for adoptability.
  • Track the movement of animals that enter the shelter, creating a pathway for placement.
  • Monitor population health, consulting with the Director of Facility Management to create and implement disease protocol.
  • Ensure humane euthanasia protocols are followed. Attend MH euthanasia training and assist Director of Operations with euthanasia drug management.


Qualifications:

  • Strong customer service and leadership skills with the ability to successfully recruit, supervise, coach, and mentor staff. Must have effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Good supervisory and customer service skills and the ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Serve as a positive role model, particularly in the areas of teamwork & customer service.
  • Exhibit compassion towards animals and their owners.
  • Possess good communication skills, diplomacy and tact, especially dealing with clients.
  • Ability to multitask under busy and distracting conditions.
  • Possesses good decision-making skills and attention to detail.
  • Maintain a position "can-do" outlook, rebounding quickly from frustrations, and maintaining a friendly demeanor while dealing with stressful situations.
  • Required weekend and holiday schedule.
  • Must be able to clean, kneel, bend, stoop, etc. and lift 50lbs.
  • Will be assisted by other staff members with animals weighing over 50lbs.
  • Will be required to walk or stand for extended periods of time. Will frequently work in a bent position.


Acquired Knowledge:

  • HS Diploma with some college coursework in accounting, business, management, or veterinary science. Associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Veterinary technician certification, licensure and experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience, including prior supervisory experience.
  • Microsoft Office skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
