University of Massachusetts Amherst Amherst, MA 01003

Associate Vice Chancellor for Issues Management

Amherst, Massachusetts

The mission of the University of Massachusetts Amherst is to create positive impact on the commonwealth and the broader society through education and advancing knowledge. UMass Amherst is a public research and land-grant university, the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system. With 1,300 faculty and 30,000+ students (13,000 living on campus), UMass Amherst is the largest public university in New England and ranked among the top 30 public universities in the nation. Working to ensure that any qualified individual will have access to high-quality higher education, UMass Amherst draws deeply on diversity as an essential strength in learning, in knowledge creation, and in building a better, more just world.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Relations, this is a new role and an extraordinary opportunity for a leader of strategic vision and insight to work collaboratively across all units of the campus, using foresight to anticipate issues, and presence of mind to effectively convene key resources and coordinate responses. The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) will chair the cross-functional Incident Response Team, and will develop proactive processes that engage sensitively, dependably, and constructively with constituents. In a crisis, this leader will act responsively, convening resources, making quick but informed decisions when required, and communicating calmly and professionally with all constituents. An experienced spokesperson who will grasp the complexities and nuances of higher education, the AVC will create two-way information channels and transparent, effective practices that monitor trends, anticipate risk, and effectively respond to emerging long-range issues and sudden crises.

A relationship builder who earns the trust and respect of all stakeholders, the AVC will help avert disagreements and misunderstandings, preserve reputations, and implement effective solutions. The AVC will be consultative, intellectually curious, innovative, committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a person of integrity who considers multiple perspectives in service of the university’s best interests. This is an opportunity for an engaging professional with sterling communication and political skills to develop respectful, consistent processes, protocols, and approaches that are timely and effective in serving all internal and external campus constituents.
