Job Summary
The Assistant Curator works under the direction of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) Director, Associate Director – Arts, and as a member of the curatorial team. The Assistant Curator assists in the development, implementation and management of artist’s residencies, events, performances, and installations in the Time-Based Arts, encompassing visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and technology. The Assistant Curator will support the curators in all aspects of producing, programming, and presenting artworks at EMPAC, including working directly with artists before, during, and following production residencies and develop fundraising and audience growth strategies for the curatorial program in collaboration with the Curators and Manager of Communication and Grants. The Assistant Curator will author and edit curatorial publications, plan lectures and talks, and develop, implement, and maintain connections and programs between campus and Capital Region communities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in fine arts or related field, and two (2) or more years in experience in curatorial, and/or artistic experience, on the national and international level of contemporary artistic development in related fields
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in fine arts, curatorial practice, arts administration or related field is preferred
- Arts Administration experience
- Experience as an independent contributor in an arts management setting, but not necessarily in curatorial setting.
- Experience Time based Visual Arts/production and management
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of contemporary artistic developments in respective field nationally and with an international perspective.
- Ability to manage and track simultaneous projects progress and costs from inception to completion.
- Knowledge of aesthetical and practical implications of digital technologies.
- Ability to learn and understand digital technologies in artistic productions
- Ability to manage projects and tasks simultaneously from inception to completion.
- Ability to apply acceptable curatorial principles, theories, concepts and techniques to tasks at hand.
- Attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to apply scholarly knowledge and curatorial principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives.
- Ability to anticipate and solve problems.
Shift
Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required
